Pronouncing Shakespeare

http://www.shakespearepost.com/2008/09/03/david-crystal’s-‘pronouncing-shakespeare’-website-goes-live/ Where does John get all the good scoops? I’m jealous. Check out the audio sample from Romeo and Juliet.  It sounds…hmmmm…I hate to say “Scottish” but that’s about as close as I can think to describe it.  It’s not at all what I would have expected.

  1. I had a similar experience when I was cast in a production of Macbeth that not only rehearsed directly from the First Folio text and in which the director was aiming for Original Pronunciation. It did sound somewhat Scottish.

Maybe both Americans and English have been mispronouncing English, and the Scots accent is the proper manner.

Sadly, due to a series of misfortunes, the production was never staged.
